THE Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dr. Peterside Dakuku, yesterday, said that the agency would be restructured to empower its three zones to ensure efficiency in the performance of its core functions.
Dakuku, who frowned at condition of the facilities at the zone, spoke when he visited the agency’s Western Zone on a familiarisation tour. He said all the powers of NIMASA will no longer reside at the head office as the zones will be empowered to carry out it’s operational responsibilities while the head office will only take charge of policies.
He noted that the economic situation in the country has made it imperative for the maritime industry which the second largest income contributor in country to be taken seriously. He stressed that for the maritime industry to succeed, NIMASA must be in the fore-front of the recovery of the economy, adding that NIMASA cannot succeed if the zones that are the operational aim of the Agency succeeds.
“For the maritime industry to work NIMASA must work. If NIMASA must work, the zones must work as regard enforcement of rules and regulations, ensuring operators compliance, port state control, flag state control etc. “We are putting a new structure in place, a new organisation. Only policy issues will be handed at the head office. There will be moment of staff and greater demand of efficiency and speed on the part of staff,” he added
