Apple's Disappearing iPad Air

Ahead of Apple’s expected launch event this March (with Jim Dalrymple suggesting March 21st “sounds right“), there are more signs from the supply chain that both the iPhone and the iPad ranges will receive new hardware. That new hardware is likely going to reduce demand for the existing models, so it’s time to clear out as many units as possible.
The signs pointing towards a new iPhone have been there for some time, although it has been mixed in with Apple underestimating the demand for the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus. After the final calendar quarter of 2015 came in with minimal year-on-year growth for Cupertino’s smartphone, Apple’s estimates for sales in the first quarter of 2016 suggested flat sales, or even a fall in iPhone sales for the first time.
Alongside this was an oversupply of iPhone handsets in the supply chain. Apple typically runs a tight supply chain and a very short ‘factory to shop floor’ time, so production was slowed down to allow the supply chain to catch up with demand - which had an impact on the component suppliers further along the chain. The last thing that Apple needs heading into the launch of a ‘don’t call it the budget’ iPhone SE is the opportunity to leave too many iPhone 6S handsets on the shelves.

Apple Insider is now reporting a reduction in the availability of a number of iPad models, notably the iPad Air and iPad Air 2. With Tim Cook expected to announce an updated 9.7 inch screened iPad at the March event (and hints that this will be a smaller version of the iPad Pro with matching specifications and Apple Pencil capability) retail supplies of the older models are falling:
As indicated in AppleInsider’s own price guides, numerous iPad models are on backorder or simply sold out. The iPad Air and Air 2 — the two devices most likely to be supplanted — are experiencing the most serious stock outs.
