Senators on Card Reader

JUST before the 2015 general elections, the card reader, the new device introduced by the electoral regulator gained currency as the election game changer with its supposed ability to scrutinise and sieve out fraudulent votes. However, the Supreme Court with its recent pronouncements on contentions in some of the most controversial governorship elections has pulled the rug off the feet of the Card Reader. We’re awaiting the Supreme Court reasons — Senator Kyari

SENATOR Abubakar Kyari, chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC in his reaction to the development said: The full text of the judgment is not yet out and until we read the judgement, I cannot at this time comment on the issue. We have ordered for the full text of the judgment and I think they told us it will be out on the 12th  of this month. And until we see that, making any comment regarding the card reader may not augur well for us as a country. But I must tell you that basically, this revolves around the change issue. When we see things that we will do to the advantages of the electoral system, to the advantage of democracy, we will not hesitate to do that. I don’t want to dwell so much into the substance.   Our laws now recognise registered voters, not card readers — Senator Ogola Senator Forster Ogola, PDP, Bayelsa East. I DON’ T need to talk about it now. We know quite well that there is a problem with the card reader, so we will know what to do at the appropriate time. It is too early to react because you must get the details of the judgment to know what the Court of Appeal did about those cases, the tribunal and then know what the Supreme Court did about them at the end. One thing I know is that the electoral law does not recognize the card reader, the Constitution does not recognize the card reader and electronic voting and that is why when court cancels election, they don’t talk of people who have card reader, they talk of people who are registered voters. Our law of the land recognizes registered voters and not card reader. So, you don’t need to force it. We will get what the judgment has said about the card reader then we will now meet to amend the law so that this seaming confusion won’t come up again.
